Gladstone Center for Girls

Assessment and Therapeutic Program
With the opening of the Gladstone Center for Girls in 1994, CHARLEE responded to the need for a short-term evaluation and treatment center for sexually abused girls entering the child welfare system. The Gladstone Center for Girls provides quality residential care for up to 21 girls at a time. Our professional staff conducts medical, psychological, and educational assessments of each child upon admission to the Center. A multi-disciplinary treatment team then evaluates and works with each child, her family and available placement possibilities to provide stability and permanence. While the children reside at a beautiful 20-bed facility, our multi-disciplinary treatment team evaluates each child, her family and available placement possibilities. After-care case management, court services, educational support and therapeutic follow-up are continued for children who leave the Center.

Services Provided:

Case Management:
Many of the children admitted to the Center are new to the dependency system and are in crisis. The core elements of case management are residential care, assessment of the child, service plan development, linking and coordination of services, monitoring, reassessment and follow-up of services. Case management also focuses on maintaining family visitation (where applicable), ensuring all medical needs are met and providing support to ensure educational success.

Mental Health Services:
The Center provides crisis intervention, individual therapy, and group therapy sessions in many different treatment modalities. Innovative therapeutic approaches are utilized in working with this population including play therapy, pet therapy, art therapy, dance/movement therapy and recreation therapies. The clinicians at the Center are all licensed eligible and have extensive experience working with children who have been abused and neglected. Group therapy sessions focus on many different topics including but not limited to, sexual/physical abuse, coping skills, anger management, self-esteem, body image, social skills training, hygiene, nutrition, and many recreational therapies.

Psychiatry Services:
Each child is seen by a licensed professional or psychiatrist within 72-hours of admission.

Educational Services:
In cooperation with Dade County Public Schools (DCPS) an Outreach School is located onsite at the Gladstone Center. There are two DCPS teachers on site with staff members in the classroom providing additional support to the teachers. This allows for a low student-teacher ratio that is essential for this population. The clients receive individualized attention as a result of the small (less than 10) number of students in each class. The behavior management program is also incorporated in the classroom with cooperative feedback from the teachers and the Center’s childcare staff.

Medical Services:
Each child is seen for a full physical exam within 72 hours of admission. There is a full-time nurse on staff that assesses and facilitates all medical referrals and appointments for the clients. While at the Center, each child has her physical, dental, and optical needs met. Whenever necessary, referrals to outside medical professionals or services are made.
